PHOTO 3 Glue can hide in many places on a chair. To make sure all the excess glue is eliminated, I use a toothbrush and water to brush away glue at the intersections of post and slats or post and rungs.

While it doesn't matter so much in the case of a chair that's going to be painted, every speck of glue must be washed away from a chair that will be given a natural finish (Photo 3). Don't shirk this process because, if you do, you will regret it when you apply that first coat of finish and every glue spot you couldn't see when you were sanding suddenly starts flashing like a neon sign.

Even with all of your preparation work in order, the assembly process can still be hectic. Even when you think you′ve checked everything, you can still miss a detail like the slat in Photo 4 which I didn′t seat as deeply as I should have.

After the glue holding the front and back ladders together has cured, the frame is assembled by joining the front and back ladders with the six side rungs (Photos 5 & 6).

Next, if the chair you′re building has arms, turn your attention to that task. With the chair shown in Photo 7, I'm using a wedged through tenon at the top of each front post to lock the arms in place. These wedges need to be aligned so that their width is perpendicular to the grain directions of the parts in which the tenons are housed — in this case the arms. A straight edge helps with the alignment of the two saw cuts that will create space for the wedge as shown in photos 7 & 8. Photos 9-12 demonstrate installation of the arms and the decorative (and useful!) wedges.
